![]() ![]() The effects of DMC were mostly handled by a single VFX company. The difference between that film and Black Panther is… But today I walked by the TV while someone was watching Dead Man’s Chest (Pirates 2), which is also loaded with Green Screen, and CGI characters, and I believed every second of it. I remember watching Black Panther and just finding so many locations to be atrociously flat, with the light entirely constant and artificial. ![]() And the reason why it is being done this way, and why it is able to be abused in the way I described, is because CGI is the one part of film making that doesn't have a union so the more you do on a bare set without locations or stages the less crew you gotta pay union rates. The specific problem you're talking about has to do with matching the lighting on set with the CGI, which is very difficult. This has left second rate companies with inexperienced staff grinding long hours for little pay that are constantly on the move from one state of the USA to the next or foreign country to the next chasing tax incentives to help keep costs down. This is especially prevalent in the blockbusters and their third acts which often get redone based on test audience responses, resulting in things like Black Panthers shift to PS2 graphics at the end.Īnd second and most importantly the studio demand that work being redone for these constant changes to be done for free as part of the original contract has pushed most of the experienced companies into bankruptcy with long time veterans either quitting or retiring. The special effects industry in movie making is broken.įirst the big films often do not have a script locked in leading to frequent changes + the 'chain of command' from studio to film maker to effects is broken with too many chefs in the kitchen making overlapping contradictory demands, both result in work having to be redone to suit frequently changing scripts. also when you shoot outside for real the sun is so bright that the exposure tends to look very contrasty, things can be very dark if they are not in direct sunlight and you are not lighting them artificially.īut yeh as someone who works in VFX it's often very stressful with the shooting portion of the project as if they don't nail the lighting for what they want to achieve in the bg it can be a disaster to make it look real, but again that's not always they aim.īatman and some other shows like Mandelorian are using LED backdrops which can look amazing but require a ton front loaded work. Usually the problem is they shoot actors in a studio and use traditional studio lighting when there really should just be one directional light (the sun) and maybe some bounce. But Marvel movies or anything like that.the priority is different - not about being photoreal but just achieving whatever direction they decided to go with in production design/conceptual stage. You look at Nolan or Villeneuve's stuff.a lot of bg replacements that you don't see. TBH a lot of clients/directors want a more stylized look.often at the expense of looking photoreal. Was probably the gist of the conversation, but spread over 1000s of movies since the advent of blue screen (OG green screen) or indeed any time/money saving film making technique. Probably save loooads of cash that we can give to those pale boys in the cellar that make everything look great on the computers" Wouldn't have to worry bout any of that other stuff. "errr boss! Y know we could just rent a massive fuck off room specially built for this kinda shit. Oh, another thing, block off at least a blocks worth of parking space for catering, talent trailers and porta potties." We cant do it with just 2 actors and a skeleton crew as the audience would notice straight away as they are pre programmed to notice 'quality' and would scream blue murder if there was one scene that suddenly looked potato. ![]() Oh that's another thing, Make sure that one shitty elevator is big enough to ferry up lights, tripods, cams, booms, reflectors etc. It's only a 1 min scene approx but well be up there for at least 8 - 12 hrs from load in to get out. "ok location scout - did you get the permits to use that building? Permits to film? What about windows in background, don't want anyone popping up naked in a window, so make sure all residents know and stay outa the way. ![]()
